01 How it works
How PTA tax is calculated
PTA tax is not one tax. It is six charges, most of them a fixed amount for your phone's value band. The value band is set by the phone's price in US dollars.
| Phone value | Customs duty | Regulatory duty | Mobile levy | Income tax (CNIC, filer) | Sales tax |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to $30 | Rs 250 | Rs 240 | Rs 100 | Rs 100 | 18% |
| $31 – $100 | Rs 250 | Rs 2,400 | Rs 200 | Rs 100 | 18% |
| $101 – $200 | Rs 250 | Rs 6,000 | Rs 200 | Rs 100 | 18% |
| $201 – $350 | Rs 250 | Rs 8,800 | Rs 1,800 | Rs 970 | 18% |
| $351 – $500 | Rs 250 | Rs 12,000 | Rs 4,000 | Rs 5,000 | 18% |
| $501 – $700 | Rs 250 | Rs 17,600 | Rs 8,000 | Rs 11,500 | 25% |
| Above $700 | Rs 250 | Rs 17,600 | Rs 16,000 | Rs 11,500 | 25% |
On CNIC, additional customs duty of 4% of the value also applies, and non-filers pay double income tax. Basic phones up to $30 pay Rs 70 income tax.
Worked example: a $1,000 phone
At Rs 278 to the dollar, the phone's value is Rs 278,000. We add a 1% landing charge to reach the customs value, Rs 280,780. Sales tax is charged on that value plus the customs duties.
On passport the total is Rs 108,508, Rs 25,539 less than on CNIC.

Customs duty, regulatory duty, sales tax and the mobile levy still apply.
CNIC
For phones bought online or sent from abroad and registered on a Pakistani CNIC. All six charges apply, including 4% additional customs duty and income tax.
If you are not on the active taxpayers list, the income tax part doubles.

New from 1 July 2026: you can pay PTA tax in instalments, as long as every instalment is paid before the end of the financial year (30 June).

Questions about PTA tax
Quick answers about tax on registering a phone in Pakistan.
Check PTA taxIs PTA tax the same on passport and CNIC?
No. Registering on a passport is cheaper, because phones brought in personal baggage pay no additional customs duty and no income tax under section 148. For a $1,000 phone the difference is about Rs 25,539 at Rs 278 to the dollar.
Do non-filers pay more PTA tax?
Yes, on CNIC registration. The income tax part doubles if you are not on the active taxpayers list (ATL). Customs duty, regulatory duty, sales tax and the levy are the same for filers and non-filers.
Is PTA tax charged by PTA or FBR?
The taxes are federal taxes collected by FBR through Pakistan Customs. PTA runs DIRBS, the system that registers the phone and generates the payment ID (PSID) once the tax is due.
Can I pay PTA tax in instalments?
Yes. From 1 July 2026, the Finance Act 2026 allows tax on a phone registered through DIRBS to be paid in instalments, as long as all instalments are paid before the end of the financial year (30 June).
Why does my PSID show a different amount?
Customs works out the tax on its own value for your phone model and its notified dollar rate. Enter the value and rate from your PSID in the calculator to match it.
Which phones pay the most PTA tax?
Phones valued above $700 pay the most: the highest regulatory duty (Rs 17,600), the highest levy (Rs 16,000) and 25% sales tax. Most new iPhone and flagship Samsung models are in this band.
